A common dream for many people is to be their own boss by running a business from home. Unfortunately, most of them won't ever realize that dream because they are afraid to try and some will take the plunge and fail. For the unique few who do succeed start by going on the internet and become affiliate marketers. One of the most convenient ways to earn an income online is by starting an affiliate marketing business. In this case, I will be focusing on the affiliate oppose to the merchant.

To succeed as an affiliate marketer the following are 5 important traits you must possess to get to the next level in this business:

1. Open to learning - there are many things you must learn to avoid the pitfalls and to succeed at a high level as an affiliate marketer. You must have the desire to learn and in many cases have the openness to be trained. Succeeding online is no different that the off line world.

• There is a measure of education involved. Fortunately, you can do a lot of it for free. Learning the business is two-fold because you can pay-it-forward by extending that knowledge to others which will subsequently grow your affiliate marketing business.

2. Prepared to invest effort and time - to truly succeed as an affiliate marketer you will have to put in as much effort as anything else you want to succeed at. To do this you must also be prepared to spend as much time on your learning curve as possible. To reach the level of earning streams of income by doing less work will require a lot of hard work and stress at the beginning.

• There is no truth to overnight riches and opportunities that claim for you to earn by doing nothing. If this were true everyone would be doing it and trust me there are very few that do this business and are hugely successful at it and those that succeed put in more time than they ever put into anything in their lives.

3. Remain endlessly determined - competition will be insanely fierce. You can easily lose hope if you allow outside forces to knock you off course. Your goal is to never give up and give 110% to everything you do. This should be true with anything you do in life that is worth fighting for. If you want to succeed online then you will as long as you do things right and not fold under pressure.

• Information overload can be one of the biggest obstacles one faces on the internet especially if they are searching to generate an income online. By staying on course to your ultimate goal and having a long-term successful affiliate marketing business then it shouldn't be a problem for you.

4. Be self-disciplined - this is easier said than done but until you are actually involved in an internet business especially as an affiliate marketer you can find yourself wandering off mentally by getting sucked into things that have no positive impact to your affiliate marketing business. Remaining consistent in your efforts will take you a long way.

• Working from home and using the internet are two landscapes that can easily push people into failure. So many distractions can occur and if you don't have the self-discipline to fight them off it is virtually impossible to succeed.

5. Be optimistic - enjoy what you are doing and have a great attitude towards your affiliate marketing business and those you come across that you hope will either become business partners and customers in the future. Your optimism will show in your promotional presentations and will reflect positively on your income.

• A great way to remain optimistic in this business is by approaching it without expecting to make a sale at every turn. I know for most affiliate marketers monetizing our efforts is why we are doing this in the first place, but if you aggressively provide sales pitches to people you will fail quickly. Provide some free quality help, information and products first and the sales will come later.
