This process, known as affiliate marketing, does not require an affiliate to carry any stock or to invest any money. All those required in most cases is that you have a website. What follows is a short primer on what to look for when setting up your affiliate marketing program for the first time.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when looking for affiliate programs to become involved with is the reputation of the company with whom you plan to align yourself. Though it is true that you're only an affiliate and that the company themselves will be responsible for order fulfillment and customer service, it is assumed that you would like these customers to return to your site and make future purchases or to refer their friends to do the same. If either the product your customers or the customer service they receive is in any way inferior, chances are good they won't be a return customer.

The second free affiliate marketing tactic I've found to be quite effective when used properly is known as an inline text link. This involves writing about the product you're attempting to sell and inserting and links to the product in the actual text of your article or blog. These links can often be far more effective than banner advertisements because subconsciously the customer does not feel as though they are being sold, rather their making a conscious decision to click a link because of what you have written.
