Most affiliate programs are free to join but how do you know which is the best affiliate program to sign up for? That takes research. Use a landing page to promote your product if you thing that the sells pitch is not good enough. This is also good for gathering email addresses so you can promote other products to that customer later.

If you don't see any sells from your ad then you need to reevaluate your ad or select a different product to promote. Good advice is to see what type of products are hot right now and promote them first before you try to sell a product that no one has heard of.

In summary, learn all you can first before you get started. Only a small amount of people make big money doing this but your can generate an income that can able you to replace your current job for life. Just make sure you don't jump in without proper knowledge first.
