Many times it becomes very complicated and time consuming for a business provider to keep track of the usage and preferences of a consumer. Also, even if the consumer could be located anywhere in the world, you cannot possibly know his or her choices or preferences. For that matter, it is convenient to handle the mandate of online advertising and marketing to the local guys of that particular region. You can also have a third party to advertise and market your product. If the consumer buys your product or service, whatever the case may be, due to the third party's or the affiliates advertisement, you pay the latter some commission as per your agreement with him.

Many times, these affiliates use the normal or the conventional marketing methods such as spam, or marketing through sending mails informing the prospective consumer about some offers or simply giving a run down on the available products. Other such marketing techniques would involve search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), or banner advertisement.
The biggest advantage of affiliate marketing is that it helps you save your time and efforts when it comes to reaching out to the consumers at a large scale. The affiliates take care of it on your behalf. They are motivated to do your job of advertising, marketing and selling as they earn some commission every time a sale happens. Even if the sale doesn't happen, you achieve a lot of traffic on your site or in other words, gain more visibility over the Internet.
