An Affiliate Marketing Overview

By Jerome Lee

Have you ever wanted to take the plunge into internet marketing, but decided not to due to the sheer overwhelming number of information sources all saying different things? I know how you feel. This article was written as a straight-forward, 'anti-scary' overview of affiliate marketing that can be used as a platform for beginning your own research. Let us begin:

What is all this talk of 'Affiliate Marketing' about? Well, Wikipedia defines it as:

"An internet-based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliates marketing efforts."

So what does that mean in English? An affiliate member will receive compensation when customer responds to that affiliate members advertisement.

Affiliate programs make the step into internet marketing easier for individuals just starting out. Partially due to most marketing materials being readily available for new members to utilize. And secondly, established programs have a recommended outline of steps to complete to begin seeing conversions. A 'conversion' is when a prospect which is responding to an affiliate members marketing material actually purchases the item(s) being advertised for. It is a 'conversion' that brings revenue into the pockets of the Affiliate Member and the Affiliate Program Sponsor. This revenue is typically split at some percentage between the two parties, and details of that split is usually identified at the time of sign up.

Therefore it is important for individuals seeking entry into the world of affiliate marketing to at least have some idea of the program being signed up for. A familiarity of the pay-out process, and also having purchased or tried the product being marketed brings integrity to the individual and 'truth in advertising' to the potential customer.

There are many types of advertising models that affiliate marketing programs use. A few of which are: PPC - Pay Per Click, PPA - Pay Per Action, PPCall - Pay Per Call, PPD - Pay Per Delivery, PTR - Pay To Read. This list is actually a fraction of the program models available today. And of course, marketing a specific product is often better suited to one marketing model than others. Matching the right 'vehicle' to the product type can make or break a marketing campaign.

The potential to become overwhelmed by these concepts is what usually leads to people dropping out of their programs. I believe that the system makes it easy to lose focus because of the number of choices available. So, in a way, internet marketing (and more specifically affiliate marketing) is a test of will and perseverance. Recognizing early on that a (legal) way to "Get Rich Quick" simply doesn't exist. It takes hard work, research, and above all else patience.

A lot of money can be made on the internet, as we have seen over the years. Affiliate Marketing is a convenient springboard to begin the journey into internet marketing without too much time invested in the development of advertising materials. This however, should not substitute research and a healthy knowledge of the product your trying to sell. Persevere, educate, and initiate - success shall follow. Good luck.
