5 Key Points to Consider When Selecting Your Affiliate Program

By Lonnie Minton

Joining an affiliate program is one of the essential things that you must do if you want an affiliate internet business online. Deciding which affiliate program or product to promote requires that you consider several items during your investigation.

Choosing an affiliate program that suits or matches your online business plan is a requirement and it is also important to your future efforts in making money online. Selecting the wrong program or product or one that does not match what you are doing in your business will not contribute to your efforts and might even hinder your efforts.

For example if you have a business in gardening and you select a golf program and promote it on your gardening site, many will wonder what on earth is a golf program doing here. This is a gardening site; I didn't come here expecting to see promotions for a golf product.

Here are 5 things that will assist you as you select an affiliate program that is right for your online business:

1. Marketing Tools. The owner of the affiliate program, even if it is you, must make available a good assortment of marketing tools. The affiliates of the program expect of have the necessary tools that will help them in their promotion efforts. It is expected that the affiliate program owner will provide these and that the affiliate will not have to develop them himself.

2. Product Popularity. Affiliates want to promote high quality and popular products. If no one wants the product, the affiliate cannot make money with his online efforts. Investigate the program and see how popular it is. As a side note, it might not be a good thing if it is the most popular affiliate program going. You might have too much competition.

3. High Commission Rate. Affiliates want as much commission for their efforts as possible. You should select programs that will earn you commissions of 30-70%. If the commissions provide residual income, that is even better. Your efforts will earn you more for each sale if the commission rate is high.

4. Payment Dependability. All affiliates want the assurance that their checks for all commissions will be paid on time and on a regular basis. Find out if the affiliate product owner has a good commission payment history. Affiliates will not continue to promote a program if they do not get commissions on time.

5. Not Too Costly. This is a somewhat controversial topic. However, I am convinced that your ability to effectively promote an affiliate product will be enhanced if you obtain the product for your own evaluation. You will know the product and its strengths as well as its weakness.

You will be able to answer questions about the product. Some would tell you that ownership is not necessary. Maybe this would be true if the owner of the product is trusted to promote only quality products. However, I don't believe you will be able to adequately promote a product that you do not personally know.

So you might want to select quality products that do not cost too much so that your budget is not strained when you purchase the product for analysis and testing. Also, it will not be too costly for your potential customers.

If you will resolve to select your affiliate programs with these 5 considerations in mind, your online affiliate internet business will have a greater chance for success.
